I rate this one four stars. The story line is good, the characters are good, plot development is good, if a little too contrived, it just lacks something to put it over the top. It was originally published in 1904 and the story was definitely written for that era where love meant marriage, sex was unmentionable, and murder was done by crafty villains out to achieve evil ends. There are lots of twists and turns to this story most of which I believe the reader will have figured out by the end. It is in the unraveling of the mystery, and in trying to tie up all of the loose ends, that story goes a little flat at times. I think this story might have been a little better if the author had skipped untangling some of the plot twists and left them to the reader's imagination.All in all, a good read, and if you get it for free on Kindle, the price is certainly right.

Dated and somewhat stiff, but fast paced, with an interesting collection of villains and surprising twists right to the end.
Not your typical Victorian detective thriller, this one gets quite complicated with all the facts and near-misses and just convoluted storytelling. It's great! Tricks, kidnapping, murder, twists and turns...I totally loved this story.
